Leather Toys Prototyping and Material Literacy at Habib University

Last month, The Leather Dude took his philosophy of "Material Literacy" to the IDEALcommons at Habib University. What started as a conversation evolved into a two-day Leather Prototyping Workshop that challenged the boundaries between traditional craft and modern design thinking.
Why Material Literacy Matters: In a world dominated by screens, we brought tangible, organic materials back to the forefront. We weren't just making wallets; we were exploring a modular construction system.
Seeing students from Computer Science (CS), Communication & Design (CND), and Social Development (SDP) engage with leather was a revelation. It proved that whether you are coding an algorithm or designing a social policy, the act of "thinking with your hands" is a universal language.
The Workshop Flow:
-
Day 1: The Fundamentals. Understanding the skin, the grain, and the tools. Students moved from observation to action, learning to cut and shape leather with precision. Each participant created a functional wallet or a miniature handbag for themselves choosing rescued leather offcuts from the "Leather Buffet" corner we created. The offcuts contained leathers from Hermes, Porsche, Gucci and various top tier brands. Some of them were as old as 20 years yet worked good as new. This interaction with the material helped them understand the characteristics before they would push the boundaries of leather on Day 2.

-
Day 2: 3D Interlocking Modules. This is where the magic happened. Using the methodology The Leather Dude has been experimenting with leather and got global recognition also validated by the expert from University of Sheffield, Leather Naturally, UNIC Italia and Reggio Emilia, students designed 3D interlocking structures, turning flat leather scraps into modular, functional toys.

The Future of the Partnership: Our discussions with the IDEAL team at Habib University have opened doors to incredible future collaborations, including:
-
Designer and Entrepreneur in Residence programs.
-
Capstone collaborations for 2026-2027.
-
Courses on Toy Design and "Endless Possibilities" play systems.
A Note for Educators: We believe that leather is the ultimate prototyping material organic, curved, and structural. If you are looking to bring this level of material literacy to your institution or corporate team, we have developed a comprehensive framework for engagement.

Junaid Vohra aka Leather Dude is out here proving that leathercraft can be cooler than coding assignments !
Absolutely love this initiative — turning material literacy into something hands-on, creative, and actually fun for students. Huge appreciation to Habib University for supporting such innovative learning, and major respect to Leather Dude for inspiring the next generation of makers and designers. Pakistan needs more of this energy!
