Leather is a natural by-product from the food industry. The main sources of animal hides are cattle – 69%; sheep – 13%; goats – 11%, and pigs – 6%. Their skins are a valuable global resource and, thanks to tanners’ and manufacturers’ skills and knowledge, they ensure this versatile material does not end up in landfill. Current estimates put this at a saving of 7.3 million tonnes for cattle hides alone and around 10 million tonnes in total per year. That is a lot of potential waste being transformed into a versatile, usable material.

Leather tanned under international LWG (Leather Working Group) standards is proven to be free from toxic materials and has not been shown to cause allergic reactions for skin irritations. However, individual sensitivities may vary, and it’s
advisable to monitor for any allergic reactions, especially in children or those with sensitive skin. under normal use.

The Little Leather Artisans program integrates STEAM learning and design thinking to engage children with leather as an organic material. Through interactive workshops, kids explore leather’s origins, its real-world applications, and use critical observation techniques to differentiate real from artificial leather. The hands-on portion encourages creativity and problem-solving as children design and craft items like wallets or keychains from pre-cut leather pieces.

By fostering innovation and practical skills, the program aims to inspire 100,000 children by December 2024, making them future stakeholders in the leather industry
